By chance I discovered the possibility to open profile files (of *.x3p type) directly in gwyddion! In section 3.5 of the documentation this is explicitly negated.

My question: is it intended to keep this feature (which I would highly appreciate)?

That part of documentation was a bit outdated. It still holds Gwyddion
does not try to be a graphing program, but 1D data (curves) are loaded
from some file formats. I removed the misleading sentence from
documentation. Thanks for the heads up.
