[Gwyddion-users] Data Browser window behavior

Hello

I am new to Gwyddion and think it is a great program.

I found something strange with the Data Browser window (see attached
file). If I uncheck the check box for the "Height" channel, all the
channels disappear instantly (and I loose my work).
I would expect the channel to be just hidden, but not to vanish! Is this
vanishing really a feature? I think it shouldn't behave like that
because the Data Browser window already has a "Delete" button that
serves the purpose of removing the channel.

Your attachment does not come through but I think if you first select the channels you want to view and after that uncheck "height" then it should be fine.

Yes, when you close all windows (images, graphs, volume...) of a file
the file itself is closed. This is a feature, at least in the sense it
is intentional.

OK. I find it strange, but it may only be a beginner's opinion. I'll
have to take care of that behavior. It's dangerous that a click on a
checkbox closes the work without possibility for saving. No problem if a
click on a button called "Delete" does this, but this is surprising for
a checkbox. It's even more surprising because when another channel is
still checked, it only hides the unchecked channel and does not close
the work.

Unchecking the checkbox is simply another way to close the window (and
thus close the file if it was the last one). You can use the checkboxes
only to show windows and always close windows using the close button.
Since the data browser shows the content of the file corresponding to
the currently active window, closing all windows of a file would make
its data inaccessible. Therefore the file is closed.

This is not the first time a similar question was asked. So a recap...
IMO the current behaviour facilitates an efficient workflow and I like
it. I will not invest my time into the implementation of a different
behaviour but I am open to patches implementing a different behaviour,
so long as they also make possible to continue using Gwyddion without
any annoying ‘do you want to save foo?’ questions.

Yeti
